The short answer

  • The DIY build is real and it is cheap. Singapore retail, checked August 2026: an Aqara Hub M100 is about S$89 and an M2 about S$99, and an Aqara Motion Sensor P1 is about S$28–33. Call it S$120–160 for a hub and one or two sensors, one-off, versus S$25–30/month for Birdhouse.
  • On pure hardware cost, DIY wins. It is not close. If you are technical and watching one parent, it is a legitimate choice and we will not talk you out of it.
  • What you are buying with a subscription is not the sensor. It is the interpretation, the escalation path, and someone noticing when the system itself dies.
  • Five things break DIY setups in practice: ambiguous "no motion", threshold alerts that are all noise or all silence, silent hardware failure, notification fatigue, and one person holding the whole thing in their head.

The DIY setup, honestly described

Buy an Aqara, Sonoff or Tuya Zigbee motion sensor and a matching hub from Shopee or Lazada. Plug the hub into your parent’s Wi-Fi. Pair the sensor, stick it on a wall in the corridor or kitchen. Open the app, create an automation: "if no motion for 8 hours, send me a notification". Total spend is roughly S$120–160 for a hub and a sensor or two — more if you pick a premium hub, since an Aqara M3 runs closer to S$275 — plus about an evening of your time. If you run Home Assistant you can go considerably further — custom thresholds, per-room logic, a dashboard, notifications to a family Telegram group.

This works. People do it. The technology underneath is not fundamentally different from what Birdhouse uses — we also run Zigbee sensors and a hub, because that hardware is mature and cheap and there is no reason to reinvent it.

The five things that break

1. "No motion" is ambiguous, and ambiguity kills trust

Your sensor sees nothing for six hours. Is your father collapsed in the bathroom, or is he at the kopitiam with his friends, as he is every Tuesday? A single motion sensor cannot tell you. This is the single most common reason DIY monitoring gets switched off — not because it failed to fire, but because it fired constantly for nothing until nobody believed it any more.

Resolving it needs more than a sensor: a door sensor to distinguish "left the house" from "stopped moving", a model of what Tuesday normally looks like for this specific person, and reasoning about partial days — early morning is quiet for everyone, and treating 5am like 5pm generates alarms nobody will keep reading.

2. A fixed threshold is either noise or silence

Pick 4 hours and you will get alerts through every afternoon nap. Pick 12 and you will sleep through the first half of a real emergency. Pick 8 and you get both problems in a smaller dose. There is no correct number, because the correct number is different for each person and different on a Sunday.

Birdhouse spends its first couple of weeks learning what normal looks like for that individual, then compares against that baseline instead of a constant. The difference shows up in the alert volume: fewer alerts, and the ones you get mean something.

3. The system dies quietly, and quiet is exactly what you are watching for

This is the failure that genuinely worries us about DIY, and it is the one people underestimate. The sensor battery goes flat. The hub gets unplugged when the TV console is rearranged. The router is replaced and nobody re-pairs anything. The Wi-Fi password changes.

In every one of those cases your setup reports exactly what a healthy, sleeping, perfectly fine parent reports: nothing. You are not being alerted, so you assume everything is fine. It can be weeks before anyone notices. A monitoring system that cannot monitor itself is worse than no system, because it manufactures false confidence.

Birdhouse tracks hub keepalives, sensor battery levels and last-sync times, and reports offline devices in the same daily summary as inactive seniors — as a separate section, so a hardware problem is never confused with a human one.

4. Notification fatigue is undefeated

Week one you check every alert. Week three the group chat is muted. Month two your phone is on silent overnight, which is when you would most want to be woken. The fix is not discipline, it is fewer and better alerts, plus a daily report that tells you things are normal so that an alert genuinely means abnormal.

5. It lives in one person’s head

DIY setups belong to the family member who built them. When that person travels, has a newborn, or falls out with a sibling over care decisions, the monitoring goes with them. There is no handover, no second pair of eyes, no shared history, and nothing to show a doctor or an Active Ageing Centre.

Care is rarely a single-person job for long. Birdhouse has accounts, roles and a shared record precisely because the second and third caregiver always show up eventually.

Where DIY is genuinely the right call

We would rather you have a working DIY setup than nothing, and there are situations where it is simply the better answer:

  • You are comfortable with Home Assistant and actually enjoy maintaining it.
  • It is one parent, one household, and you live close enough to physically check.
  • You want raw data under your own control and have opinions about where it is stored.
  • Budget is the binding constraint. S$140 once is not S$300 a year, and that is a real difference for a real family.

If that is you, at minimum do these three things: add a door sensor so you can tell "went out" from "stopped moving", build a heartbeat check that alerts you when the hub goes quiet for more than an hour, and put the alerts somewhere a second family member also sees.

The cost question, answered straight

Over three years, DIY runs roughly S$120–160 in hardware plus a few dollars of replacement batteries. Birdhouse Basic runs S$900 over the same period. Birdhouse is more expensive in dollars, full stop — roughly six times more.

What we learned that changed our own design

Birdhouse started as essentially a DIY build — motion sensors, a hub, a rule. Nearly everything we added afterwards came from watching that version fail in real homes: partial-day reasoning because early-morning alerts were useless, device health monitoring because a flat battery once looked exactly like an inactive senior, and daily "all normal" reports because families told us that not hearing anything was its own kind of anxiety.
